Stanislav Petrov, the former Soviet military officer credited with singlehandedly averting a possible nuclear disaster during the Cold War, has died age 77. Petrov was the commanding officer on duty at a nuclear early warning facility in the early hours of Sept. 26, 1983, when his computers falsely identified several U.S. missiles headed toward Moscow, the BBC reports. Having only 20 minutes to act, Petrov decided to regard the warnings as a false alarm. Instead of informing the military about an impending nuclear strike, he told his superiors about a system malfunction. "I had all the data [to suggest there was an ongoing missile attack]. If I had sent my report up the chain of command, nobody would have said a word against it," Petrov recalled in a 2013 interview with the BBC's Russian service. https://players.brightcove.net/293884104/SJa0Thl7_default/index.html?videoId=5371550735001 "The siren howled, but I just sat there for a few seconds, staring at the big, back-lit, red screen with the word 'launch' on it," he said. An investigation would later discover that Soviet satellites had mistaken sunlight reflecting on clouds for intercontinental ballistic missile engines. Petrov died on May 19 at his home in Moscow. News of his death emerged this month when Karl Schumacher, a German filmmaker who brought Petrov's tale of nuclear near-miss to light, called to wish the retired officer a happy birthday. Schumacher was told by Petrov's son, Dimitri, that he had died in May. Full article here: http://time.com/4947492/stanislav-petrov-soviet-officer-nuclear-war/

Declassified CIA documents have indicated that Hitler may not have committed suicide in his bunker. In 1955, the CIA's Western Hemisphere Division chief was allegedly sent a secret memo from the acting station chief in Venezuela who had received word from one of his informants that Hitler had actually survived the war and was now living a secluded existence in Argentina. The informant was none other than former SS trooper Phillip Citroen, who claimed to have been in regular contact with Hitler, who was going by the name Adolph Schuttlemayer, on a monthly basis. The document concluded by stating that none of those involved were in a position to provide an intelligence evaluation on the matter and that it was being forwarded as of "possible interest". Even more intriguing was the discovery by the WHD chief of a similar report filed a year earlier claiming that, not only Hitler, but a whole group of Nazis had been living in South America. "Phillip Citroen told a former member of this base that while he was working for a railroad company in Colombia, he met an individual who strongly resembled and claimed to be Hitler," the memo reads. "Citroen claimed to have met the indivdual at a place called 'Residencias Coloniales' in Tunja, Colombia, which is, according to the source, overly populated with former Nazis." Hitler had allegedly left Columbia for Argentina in January 1955 and Citroen had also mistakenly suggested to the station chief that, as ten years had passed, he could no longer be prosecuted. The matter however was ultimately dropped and nothing else ever came of it. The declassified document, along with an alleged snap of Hitler, can be viewed - https://www.cia.gov/library/readingroom/docs/HITLER%2C ADOLF_0003.pdf

The latest CS:GO Beta update brings new changes to pistols, continuing on on the path of "emphasizing skillful use of the weapons". The "1.36.0.3-rc1" update, that has been released to the Beta depot, brings new changes to pistols. The Glock, which was unchanged for years, received a buff in base damage and slight buffs in moving accuracy and rapid fire accuracy. On the flip side, the damage at longer distances has been reduced, making the default Terrorist pistol even weaker in long-range battles. Seemingly balancing it out is the change to the P250, which now rewards longer range engagements against unarmored opponents. The $300 gun now has increased base damage and higher damage at longer instances, but less armor penetration and moving accuracy. It is important to note that, due to the drop off in armor penetration, the P250 can no longer one-shot helmeted opponents which have full health. Adding to that, a big change has been made to unarmored aimpunch, which is now significantly reduced, making players without a kevlar vest much more dangerous in duels. The full list of changes for 9/12/2017 Beta update is available below: [GAMEPLAY] Significantly reduced unarmored aimpunch. Additional changes to pistols with the goal of emphasizing skillful use of the weapons. Glock: Slight adjustments favoring accurate players who close the distance to their opponent. The changes Valve have introduced in the Beta depot last week, including Tec-9 adjustments, crouch-jump bug fix, and removal of the silent jump, have now been applied to the main game. Earlier this week, a Beta update was released by Valve, which perhaps most importantly addressed the crouch-jump bug, thanks to which players were able to spot over various objects without being seen. Apart from that, the update that is now live in the main game includes significant adjustments to the Tec-9's accuracy and ammo, which is Valve's first step towards "emphasizing skillful use" of pistols. Here is the changelog of today's update: [GAMEPLAY] Shipping initial changes to pistols with the goal of emphasizing skillful use of the weapons, beginning with the Tec-9. Tec-9: The Tec-9 has been adjusted to emphasize aiming while retaining the weapon’s high mobility. The current changes include: slightly improved accuracy when taking a single shot significantly reduced accuracy when firing rapidly magazine and reserve ammo reduced to 18 and 90, respectively Extended the existing camera height restriction system to include cases where a player is in the air, preventing the first-person camera from rising above their third-person head. Players will now make a landing sound if they un-crouch while crouch-jumping. Fixed several inconsistencies where sounds were not broadcast when a player was occluded by a wall. (Thanks, simpleavaster!) [LINUX] Cleaned up the way CS:GO launches so there is one fewer process

The new employee will be tasked with, among other things, protecting Earth from alien contamination. The role, which is worth $187,000 a year, will initially involve ensuring that bacteria and other contaminants from the Earth do not make their way on to Mars or other planetary bodies. "Planetary protection is concerned with the avoidance of organic-constituent and biological contamination in human and robotic space exploration," the job posting reads. "NASA maintains policies for planetary protection, applicable to all space flight missions that may intentionally or unintentionally carry Earth organisms and organic constituents to the planets or other solar system bodies, and any mission employing spacecraft, which are intended to return to Earth and its biosphere with samples from extraterrestrial targets of exploration." The new officer is likely to play a prominent role in preparing NASA's upcoming Mars rover for launch in 2020 as well as in overseeing the design of the space agency's planned mission to Europa. Under the Outer Space Treaty of 1967, any space mission must have less than a 1 in 10,000 chance of contaminating an alien world - a rule that is particularly important when that world may harbor life. Ensuring that a sample return mission does not contaminate the Earth is also of utmost importance. Full article here : http://edition.cnn.com/2017/08/03/health/nasa-planetary-position-trnd/index.html

In CS:GO Beta depot's newest update, Valve addressed the crouch-jump bug, removed the ability to do a silent jump, and made adjustments to the Tec-9. BIG's infamous crouch-jump mechanic has been addressed in Valve's Beta update The Beta update most importantly features a fix to the crouch-jump bug that was in heavy use by BIG in the PGL Major Krakow cycle, which resulted in heated discussions surrounding the use of the glitch at the Major itself in Poland, before all teams agreed not to use it throughout the remainder of the tournament. Valve has now extended the camera height restriction system to mid-air cases so that the first-person camera is prevented from reaching higher than their head in third-person. Furthermore, the jump technique thanks to which players were able to spot over various obstructions silently (by crouch-jumping and releasing crouch mid-air) has practically been removed, as such action will result in a landing sound in the newest Beta update. The developers have also addressed the Tec-9 as the first step towards "emphasizing skillful use" of pistols, which includes several changes to the popular Terrorist-sided weapon. The full changelog of CS:GO Beta depot's 1.35.9.7-rc1 version can be seen below: [GAMEPLAY] Shipping initial changes to pistols with the goal of emphasizing skillful use of the weapons, beginning with the Tec-9. Facebook was forced to shut down one of its artificial intelligence experiments due to an unforeseen issue In what could be a sign of things to come, the social media giant took the decision to pull the plug after the system came up with its own language and started communicating in unintelligible sentences. The news highlights the potential unpredictability of artificial intelligence systems and the reason why Elon Musk, Stephen Hawking and other prominent figures in the science and technology sectors have been warning us for years that AI poses a major risk to the future of mankind. While a chatbot making up its own language isn't threatening in itself, it's easy to see how, in the future, a more advanced AI could, for example, decide that humanity is a threat to its existence. Having two AIs communicating in a made-up language that only they can understood is a chilling example of how such systems could thwart their human creators and carry out their own agendas. In a worst case scenario, intelligent machines could even be given control over weapon systems. "I have access to the very most cutting edge AI, and I think people should be really concerned about it," Elon Musk said recently. "AI is a rare case where I think we need to be proactive in regulation instead of reactive. Because I think by the time we are reactive in AI regulation, it's too late." An example of what happens when two AIs get in to a conversation can be viewed below.
