Battle #5: Kasserine Pass

	History

"Defending the pass was a force consisting of the U.S. 1st Battalion, 26th Regimental Combat Team, the U.S. 19th Combat Engineer Regiment, the 6th Field Artillery Battalion, a tank destroyer battalion and a battery of French artillery. On the hills to their west was French General Welvert's Task Force Welvert comprising a U.S. Ranger and infantry battalion, three French infantry battalions, two U.S. field artillery battalions, four French artillery batteries and engineer and anti-aircraft detachments. Furthest west was Task Force Bowen (consisting of the 3rd Battalion of the 26th Regimental Combat Team), blocking the track from Feriana towards Tebessa. Between Task Force Bowen and Tebessa to the north was the regrouping 1st Armored Division although only Combat Command B was fit for combat. The positions in the pass had been placed under Colonel Alexander Stark, commander of the 26th RCT, on the night of February 18 and the command named Stark Force.

An attempt to surprise the Kasserine defenses by the 33rd Reconnaissance Unit into the pass failed and a battalion of Panzer grenadiers was ordered into the floor of the pass and another onto Djebel Semmama, the hill on its eastern flank and slow progress was made against artillery fire. The tanks of 1/8th Panzer Regiment were committed at noon but little further progress resulted against stubborn defense. Rommel decided to commit his units from the 10th Panzer to the Kasserine Pass the next morning in a coordinated attack with the Afrika Korps Assault Group, which was to be joined by elements of the Italian 131st Armored Division Centauro. British reinforcements from the 26th Armoured Brigade (6th Armoured Division) had been assembling at Thala and Brigadier Dunphie, making forward reconnaissance, decided to intervene. The First Army headquarters restricted him to sending Gore Force, a small combined-arms group of a company of infantry, a squadron of 11 tanks, an artillery battery and an anti-tank troop. Brigadier Cameron Nicholson (6th Armoured Division) was given command of Nickforce, all units north-west of the pass.

During the night, the American positions on the two shoulders overlooking the pass were overrun and at 8:30 am German panzer grenadiers and Italian Bersaglieri resumed the attack. At 10:00am Dunphie judged that Stark Force was about to give way and ordered Gore Force to the Thala side of the pass as elements of the Centauro Division launched their attack towards Tebessa and continued it during the afternoon. On February 20th during the opening attack on key American positions of the town of Djebel, the 5th Bersaglieri Regiment made a frontal assault on U.S. positions that lasted most of the morning and finally carried the position, losing the regimental commander Colonel Bonfatti in the process. This action cracked open the allied defenses, opening the road to Thala and Tebessa. By midday the accompanying combined Axis armored units poured through the pass routing U.S. forces with the 1st U.S. armored division into one of the worst U.S. defeats of the Tunisian Campaign. The Italian regiment was complimented by General Bulowius, commander of the DAK assault group who sited their action as the instrumental event of the Axis victory. At 1:00 pm Rommel committed two battalions from 10th Panzer which overcame the defense. Tanks and Bersaglieri from the Centauro Division advanced along Highway 13 and overran the 19th Combat Engineer Regiment. The U.S. survivors made a disorganized retreat up the western exit from the pass to Djebel el Hamra, where Combat Command B of the 1st Armored Division was arriving. On the exit to Thala, Gore Force slowly leapfrogged back, losing all its tanks in the process, to rejoin the 26th Armoured Brigade some 10 miles (16 km) further back."

	Battle #4: Majardah

	History

"The Battle over Majardah river, also known as the Battle of Tebourba, a town on the east of the river, took place on the Tunisian Front after the successful Anglo-American landing on November 8, 1942; and represented the so-called "Race in Tunis" of the Allied troops trying to crush the last efforts of the Axis forces, abruptly sent by Hitler to Tunis and Bizerte. Main objective was to avoid the axis to regroup, form a new stable front and counterattack. However, after some first successful allied attacks, from 1 December, the German forces, reinforced by the arrival of efficient armored units, launched a successful counter-offensive with the Panzertruppen, much more experienced and equipped with the new modern panzer.

They inflicted a serious defeat to the inexperienced Anglo-American forces, forcing them to retreat, stabilize a solid front on the Tunisian border and imposing a prolonged stop to the Allied advance. War on Africa wasn't over. "

	Battle #3: Sidi Muftah

	History

"To complete the attack, elements of the Italian XX Motorized Corps and 101st Motorized Division Trieste were to clear a path through the minefields north of Bir Hakeim and near the Sidi Muftah box to supply the armored advance. To hold Allied troops in place, the Italian X and XXI Corps would assault the Gazala Line near the coast. At 2:00 PM on May 26, these formations moved forward. That night, Rommel personally led his mobile forces as they began the flanking maneuver. Almost immediately the plan began to unravel as the French mounted a vigorous defense of Bir Hakeim, repelling the Italians.
A short distance to the southeast, Rommel's forces were held up for several hours by the 7th Armoured Division's 3rd Indian Motor Brigade. Though they were forced to withdraw, they inflicted heavy losses on the attackers.
By midday on the 27th, the momentum of Rommel's attack was faltering as British armor entered the battle and Bir Hakeim held out. Only the 90th Light had clear success, over-running the 7th Armoured Division's advance headquarters and reaching the El Adem area. As fighting raged over the next several days, Rommel's forces became trapped in an area known as "The Cauldron.
This area saw his men trapped by Bir Hakeim to the south, Tobruk to the north, and the minefields of the original Allied line to the west. Under constant assault by Allied armor from the north and east, Rommel's supply situation was reaching critical levels and he began to contemplate surrender. These thoughts were erased when early on May 29 supply trucks, supported by the Italian Trieste and Ariete Divisions, breached the minefields north Bir Hakeim. Able to re-supply, Rommel attacked west on May 30 to link up with the Italian X Corps. Destroying the Sidi Muftah box, he was able to split the Allied front in two."

	Battle #2: Kiswe

	History

" At 04:00 on 15 June, Indian troops made a frontal attack which fortuitously coincided with a relief of the Vichy force's forward troops. After fierce fighting, the village was taken by 08:30. By 09:00, the Indian troops were pushing forward into the hills behind the village which overlooked the main road from the west and within an hour had captured Tel Kissoué. On the river on the far left flank of the advance, the village of Monkelbe had been secured by Free French marines by 11:30.

A second phase of the attack had begun at 11:00 with Free French forces advancing across the river into the hills on the right of the Damascus road. Having captured Jebel Kelb, the advance stalled on Jebel Abou Atriz, while on the far right a flanking move by Free French tanks was stopped by heavy shelling from Vichy artillery. Further depressing news for Lloyd came from the Allied troops holding Quneitra, on the other main road to Damascus from the south, who reported the approach of a strong Vichy force from the north. Furthermore, Lloyd's own lines of communication were being threatened by the capture of Ezraa by Vichy Tunisian troops which had advanced cross country from Tel Soutaine to the east. Ezraa was only 6 mi (9.7 km) to the east of Sheikh Meskine which was on the main road south from Kissoué. "

	Scrimmage

	About The Scrimmage
For the new players, the scrimmage is there to help players get to know each other in their various companies and regiments, while it allows the mappers and admins to look for issues in the maps when they are played with a larger player base.

Vehicles and kits are to be considered as liable to change after the scrimmage. We have admin members who deal with this topic - we do not need player input regarding this.

If you spot any problems, then please post screenshots (with zoomed in minimap showing location) along with the name of the map and what the problem is, in the forums thread at https://cmp-gaming.com/topic/7313-fh2-campaign-19-scrimmage-17th-april/

We will be playing around 30 - 45 minutes per map to allow cycling through all those currently available to test.

FH2 Campaign #19 - Mare Nostrum: Battle #1 Thermopyles

CMP FH2 Campaign #19: Mare Nostrum

	Battle #1: Thermopyles

	History

"The Olympus line is outflanked and the Allies are on the run, trying to reach their ships in time. But 2 brigades from the British Commonwealth Forces have to cover the retreat, with no hope for victory. The place they have chosen couldn’t match better to their cause. The sacred place of Thermopyles is about to face one more struggle. The Allies, few against many, inspired by the sacrifice of the Spartans nearly 2500 years ago, are determined to hold the Germans for as long as it is needed. They are the last obstacle before the enemy conquers Athens, just like Leonidas and his 300 were standing with no fear against the Persians. In the morning of the 24th of April, the Germans unleash their armored hordes. Glory is about to crown the arms of the defenders of freedom once more… "

In this series, we will talk about one of our future map: Bodange. This first dev blog will be focused on design, environment and statics.

But first, what is this map about? Bodange is a small village in the Belgian Ardenne, near to the German border. Established in a steep valley through which flows the Sûre river, it was an easy-to-defend key point on the roads of the German armies towards Sedan in May 1940. As a result, firmly entrenched in favorable positions that allowed them to lock down the valley, about sixty Belgian Chasseurs Ardennais managed to hold out all the day of the 10th of May against the advanced elements of the 1.PanzerDivision. The Belgians only left the battlefield after exhausting all their ammunition.

That's, in short, the context of the map. A second blog will go deeper into military aspects.

But let's start with a minimap overview of the map:

We can compare it with an aerial photo of 1971 (all credits go to the Géoportail de la Wallonie):

And I guess, you will first notice that there weren't much forests back in time! Actually, the Ardennes wasn't much of a forest. Most of the land was used for agriculture; it is only recently that it has been taken over by the timber industry.

But to help making the gameplay fun and actually playable, we decided to add more woods than there was back in time to cover spawn points or routes to flags.

	Topography

N.B. all in game screen shots are WIP.

This topographic map should help you to visualise the relief of the area.

As you can see, the two rivers, the Sûre, flowing North to South, and the Basseille, flowing East to West, are "digging" the valley steep. The Germans would attack from the road North/East (Rue de la Fieltz) and from the southern road, the N(ationale)848, following the Sûre river.

While the Belgians are lying in ambush at the top of Le Stein hill, and in the houses and farms along Rue Haute, the two rivers, the need to attack down the slopes exposed to the enemy uphill, and then to climb the other side of the valley to storm the Belgian positions, will make the party hard for the Germans if the Belgians manage to use their positions wisely.

	The Stein. Looking south.

	Rue Haute. Looking North/East.

Rue Haute, looking to the Stein.

Attacking from the Fiels forest will be of no help since this one ends into a cliff, giving a natural "shield" between the two main roads.

Note that there were barbed wires all along the Sûre. There was too a railway down the cliff, which no longer exists.

But fortunately for the Germans, the slopes of the valley are mostly covered with woods, helping them to find cover to progress down to Belgian positions.

Planted pines forests, dedicated to industrial production, like all forests of the area. Barely nothing grows into the ground, just a bit of moss.

These forests might also help the Germans to flank the Belgians West of Rue Haute, going down the Stein to cross the Basseille at a dam and secure the Perrad sawmill.

Perrad mill from the northern slopes of the Stein. The watermill was actually used for the flour but also to slice wood, a detail we unfortunately couldn't depict in game...

On the other side of the map, the Belgians destroyed the bridge over the Sûre, at the entrance of the town...

The bridge, made by Cpt.Bocquier, is a 1:1 copy of the historical bridge of Bodange.

... but fortunately for the Germans, the river is shallow here. And they can still try crossing another ford, north of the bridge...

... but this one is well guarded! You can see, camouflaged into the slope, a small Devèze Type D bunker.

Devèze refers to Albert Devèze, a Minister of the Defence having advocated the construction of a line of fortifications in the Belgian Ardenne in 1933-35, the Devèze Line. These constructions are light, since troops were supposed to only delay an attack from Germany before reaching a defensive redoubt in the Flanders.

Another one is hidden just under the Stein, along the N848.

They were simply made to host a light machine gun...

... unlike this other Type D Devèze bunker, able to host an heavy machine gun thanks to its Affût Chardome.

Inside the bunker, with its Affût Chardome.

All these bunkers were made by Cpt.Bocquier.

Finding the location of the last one was not easy. Various sources mention a bunker "in Hartman farm", being blown up by a PaK-36, equipped with a MG-08, and having views over the river. Contemporary mentions said its remainings are still in a garden around there. So, this photo, taken after the battle, plus another one in Google Maps street view, let us think it was actually there:

Camouflaged into the farm, this one was meant to fire at the river crossing under the bridge. For sure, the Belgians did their best to use the topography at their advantage!

 Architecture and landmarks

As you will see below, Bodange is quite of an uniform village colour-wise. Under their thick stone walls, which gave a great service to the Chasseurs in 1940, the houses were generally coated with white, and their roofs covered in slate.

To give the map its real life uniformity, we retextured some of our existing houses, but I also decided to make a small new set of houses to complete the "bulge" one.

It also appeared that we actually lacked of buildings to make realistic huge farms, with their courtyards, as they appears in the photos of the town...

Here a photo from end of 19th century or early 20th century, to compare with the layout of the map. Some buildings didn't exist yet at the time the photo was taken, and the vegetation has evolved as well. Take note that the map is not a 1:1 copy of the real terrain, but very close. Thus some stuff are depicted a bit packed compared to real life.

We were also missing opened farm houses, where to hide the heavy machine guns of the Chasseurs, like they did at Bodange...

Both of them still exist. First one is also inspired by another house at the end of Rue Haute. For the latter one, we have a photo of it in 1931.

All these houses were made by myself, with help, advice and amendments of Cpt.Bocquier.

And finally, the ancient train station of Bodange, made by Cpt.Bocquier too.

The train station no longer exists. About the hotel, photos of 1940 show it has been rebuilt into something more modern. The hotel has changed again after the war, but still exists under the name of Le Martin-Pêcheur ("The Kingfisher")!

The crossing of Bodange near the train station by the Panzers, shortly after the battle.

And to end up this small tour of the map, another landmark, the "waterfall" of Bodange....

Of course, that photo was probably taken in 19th century or early 20th century, when there wasn't vegetation at all, or almost!

But you'll surely be able to compare these photos, and others you could find, with the map when it will be out!

And we will just leave you with some ambience stuff, to get yourself immersed right in 1940, made and researched by Cpt.Bocquier!

What would be Belgium without their delicious beers? As the German attack took everyone by surprise, I have depicted the map like if peaceful activities had been suddenly interrupted, as you will see in many places on the map.

Hope you have enjoyed reading this blog, and see you for the next one!

all of the CMP community a wonderful holiday and hopes for a fantastic New Year.

With our final Forgotten Hope 2 battle of 2025 complete and the 18th campaign now over, we now look forward to the holidays and heading into the start of a new year.

In this moment, it is a perfect time to celebrate the small things that keep CMP strong: a friendly message, or witty banter on Discord or TeamSpeak, someone stepping up to help another member of the community with technical support, real-life meet-ups over food and laughter, and the countless hours spent together in the various games we play, including our signature FH2 campaigns. Those everyday gestures are what make this community a home.

In April 2026 CMP will turn 9 — nine years of friendships, shared victories (and defeats), and a welcoming place for players from all walks of life. We've grown to over 3,000 members, our events stay busy, and our spirit of support and camaraderie remains our greatest achievement.

Thanks to everyone who helps to run our events, moderates our platforms, organizes games and meet-ups, or simply shows up to play and be kind. As we head into the new year, let’s keep that warmth and teamwork alive.

In 2025 we took our two FH2 campaigns from the vast landscapes of the Eastern Front, to the claustrophobic jungles of the Pacific, offering a mix of our previous quality custom maps, and a number of re-imagined and new maps never played before in a campaign.

These rarely played battlefronts have proved popular with our community, and we've consistently seen a full server on a Friday night for our battles - not only with gamers from our existing playerbase, but also from a new generation of gamers who have discovered the game and are looking for the fun of being involved in organised events.

There is so much that goes on in the background to keep the community, campaigns and events running and we must recognise the core group of CMP members who tirelessly give their all for this wonderful community of players. They work long hours, using their free time to bring our community not only two custom FH2 campaigns each year, but also to make sure that CMP can thrive going forward, and they deserve a heartfelt thank you from us all.

Without the dedication from those listed below, there would be no CMP community, and no FH2 campaigns for us all to enjoy:

	CMP 2025 Recap
Over the past 12 months we have:

Hosted both our Eastern Front and Pacific FH2 campaigns. Axis took victory in both of the campaigns this year. For 2026 we will again mix up some of the squads to help try and keep the playing field even in 2026!

We want to thank the HQ's, Officers and Squad Leaders for taking the time to lead and help players in these campaigns, attending trainings, meetings and battles. Without you, these campaigns would not have been possible!

Also, to the players who may be old veterans, or brand new to FH2 and playing in CMP campaigns - Thank You! Yet again we've seen the server nearing max capacity during the campaigns. We hope you will keep coming back for more in the future.

Continued to organise community games such as:

 CS2

 Hell Let Loose

 Squad 44

 Star Citizen

 Valheim

Come and join them if you play these games!

	Christmas Holiday Break
Now that the 18th FH2 campaign is over, those involved in the long process of planning the campaigns will be taking a well deserved break over Christmas and the New Year. However, we have already started making plans for an exciting Campaign #19! We expect the next FH2 campaign to start sometime in March 2026.

We'd like to get feedback on the community on what you'd like to see in the next FH2 campaign!

We are switching back to more early war battles and have to decide: For the next campaign do we focus on North Africa only, Greece and North Africa, or Greece, North Africa and Italy? Vote in the poll attached to this message to have your say!

The next campaign will again consist of 12 battles. We can either play 12 battles in North Africa, or a number of battles in Greece before moving to play the rest in North Africa, or a mix of Greece, North Africa and Italy maps.

The poll closes on the 15th January 2026, so make sure to vote before then.

We also welcome all new players to join us in upcoming FH2 campaigns, and if you have played in at least one of our campaigns and would like to volunteer for a role as a Squad Leader, Regimental Commanding Officer or even as HQ then please let @Quicksilver or @RayderPSG know by Private Message in the forums and we'll see if we can find a place for you.

	CMP In 2026
We are looking to increase support for existing gaming groups and the number of games we support over the next year:

 Continuing our FH2 campaigns;

As Star Citizen increases in scope and activities we will be hosting more events including our entry into the Daymar Rally! Come and join us at ANTCORP!

	Donating To CMP
In 2025 our donators helped us to exceed our target goal for the year.

Without donations to help cover the costs for servers and software we cannot continue to create and host FH2 campaigns, support new games when possible; as well as run the forums, Teamspeak and Discord channels. As we begin a new year we will again need members to step up and donate whatever they can afford to help cover the monthly community costs - even a few Euros will help.

In 1915, the Russian military began developing aerosleds, or 'aerosani,' based on commercial designs. These vehicles were used for reconnaissance, communication, transporting supplies, and medical evacuation. Initially equipped with unarmed three-ski models like the ANT-IV, NKL-6, and NKL-16/37, it was not until after the Winter War that the Red Army fully recognized their importance - not only in logistics but also in direct combat.

By the end of 1941, the lack of mounted armament on the NKL-16 aerosleds became a critical disadvantage, prompting the development of the NKL-26, a new armored and armed model with similar capabilities. Designed by N. M. Andreev and M. V. Veselovsky, the NKL-26 was operated by a two-person crew. It featured four individual skis, and its hull was constructed from plywood reinforced with a 10 mm armored plate at the front, which included an observation hatch for the driver/mechanic. The vehicle was equipped with a circular pedestal mount on top, fitted with a 7.62 mm DT machine gun for the commander/gunner. The NKL-26 retained the same powertrain as the NKL-16, using the M-11 five-cylinder, air-cooled radial aviation engine. This engine provided an operational speed of 30–50 km/h on ice. Mass production of the NKL-26 began in December 1941.

Aerosani battalions began operations in January 1942, integrated with combined arms units, primarily ski battalions, while occasionally conducting independent missions on the Northwest Front, the Moscow Front, and in the Staraya Russa area.

The winter campaign of 1942–43 marked the peak of aerosled deployment, with the most effective units operating on frozen rivers and lakes, such as Lake Ladoga and Lake Ilmen, as well as in the coastal regions of the Gulf of Finland and on the Karelian Front. Their most renowned combat action took place during the Novgorod–Luga offensive in January 1944, where aerosani played a decisive role in establishing a bridgehead south of Novgorod. Our NKL-26 was made by Jeandiz and Matt Baker.

In February 1943, the German Army General Staff explored the possibility of mounting a self-propelled 12.8 cm gun on a super-heavy tank chassis, intended for infantry support and engaging armored targets at ranges up to 3,000 meters. Emphasizing firepower and thick armor over speed, Henschel developed the Tigerjäger Ausf. B, mounting a 12.8 cm KwK L/55 gun in an elongated Tiger II "Tiger H3" chassis with a front casemate. The suspension, designed by Porsche, was similar to that of the Panzerjäger Tiger (P) "Ferdinand" tank destroyer.

The first Tigerjäger Ausf. B prototypes, later renamed the Jagdtiger, were produced in February 1944. Weighing 70 tonnes, the vehicle featured 250 mm of frontal armor on the casemate and 80 mm on the sides and rear. It was equipped with the Winkelzielfernrohr 2/1 optic, offering 10x magnification and a 7-degree field of view for aiming the main gun. In September 1944, a new suspension system developed by Henschel was introduced for series production.

That same month, Schwere Panzerjäger-Abteilung 512 and 653 were fully equipped with Jagdtigers. Their crews were composed of battle-hardened veterans, many of whom had previously fought in Italy, Tunisia, and on the Eastern Front, including during the failed Tiger II's assault at Oględów in August 1944.

The Jagdtiger saw its first combat during Operation Nordwind, the German offensive against U.S. and French positions in the Rhineland-Palatinate, Alsace, and Lorraine regions. However, the operation revealed the tank destroyer’s limitations: its poor mechanical reliability and mobility rendered it largely ineffective. At the start of Nordwind, only two Jagdtigers reached the front due to numerous breakdowns during transit. A few more arrived later to support the 17. SS-Panzergrenadier-Division and 21. Panzer-Division’s Kampfgruppe Liehr, participating in heavy armored engagements at Hatten-Rittershoffen.

Following this, Jagdtigers continued to see limited action in Germany and Austria until the end of the war in Europe. A total of 85 Jagdtigers were produced by April 1945. Ours was made by FHSWMan, Stubbfan and Matt Baker. We would like to give a special thanks to Forgotten Hope Secret Weapons for this beast.

This Jagdtiger was based on the Kingtiger made by AceS and Rad. We took the opportunity to update the render of this Forgotten Hope 1 veteran :

FH2 Campaign #18 - The Rising Sun: Battle #12 Iwo Jima

CMP FH2 Campaign #18: The Rising Sun

	Battle #12: Iwo Jima

	History

"The first wave, the 4th Marine Division on the right and the 5th on the left, moved virtually unmolested toward the shore. At 8:59 am, after 30 minutes of steaming, the first amtracs hit the beach. With no coral barrier reef or killer neap tide to worry about—as at Tarawa—some 8,000 troops stormed ashore on their designated beaches right at H-hour. Light enemy fire gave some of the Marines fleeting hopes of a cakewalk, but they soon found themselves battling two unexpected physical obstacles—black volcanic ash, into which men sank up to a foot or more, and a steep terrace 15 feet high in some places, which only a few amtracs managed to climb.
A volcanic island, all of Iwo Jima’s beaches were extremely steep; with deep water so close to shore, the surf zone was narrow but violent. The soft, black sand immobilized almost all the armored mortar and rocket-firing vehicles that accompanied the Marines as they came ashore and bellied up some of the amtracs.

"In short order, a succession of towering waves hit the stalled vehicles before they could completely unload, filling their sterns with water and sand and broaching them broadside. The beach soon resembled a salvage yard. Once the beaches were choked with landing craft and the steep terraces clogged with infantry, Kuribayashi fired signal flares, after which the defenders opened up with heavy ordnance—hidden mortars and artillery batteries—in a rolling barrage of their own.
Undeterred, fresh waves of Marines arrived every five minutes. Despite the usual confusion, the first combat patrols pushed 150 yards inland, then 300. Enemy troops opened up, firing from rabbit holes, bunkers, and pillboxes, but slowly and desperately the Marines continued to push forward in small groups rather than as a united force. Each Japanese bunker and rabbit hole meant a fight to the death, with each enemy position supported by many others. "

"The defenders would disappear down one hole and pop up at another, often behind rather than in front of the advancing Marines. The invaders struggled on, pouring bullets and grenades into enemy positions. Navy fire-support ships moved in closer, taking out some of the nearest Japanese firing positions with deadly accuracy. Facing 4th Division’s lines were 10 reinforced concrete blockhouses, seven covered artillery positions, and 80 pillboxes. Hidden land mines also took a heavy toll on the advancing Marines.
Among those killed in the first day of fighting was the most famous NCO of the Pacific War—Gunnery Sergeant John Basilone. After being awarded the Medal of Honor for his remarkable service during the Battle of Guadalcanal, “Manila John” Basilone had been sent on a highly publicized war bond drive back in the States. Despite being newly married, Basilone requested that he be allowed to return to active duty with the 1st Battalion, 27th Marines. He was killed by machine-gun fire on Red Beach 1 and posthumously awarded a Navy Cross."

FH2 Campaign #18 - The Rising Sun: Battle #11 Peleliu

CMP FH2 Campaign #18: The Rising Sun

The 1st Mar. Div. had fought on Guadalcanal, America’s first amphibious landing in World War II, from August to December 1942. The “Old Breed” then secured a lodgment on Cape Gloucester, New Britain, fighting there from December 1943 to February 1944. These men were in less than ideal condition having endured one of the wettest campaigns of the war. Most were suffering from weight loss and fungus infections, but would recover by the time of the Peleliu attack.
The Marines on Peleliu were seasoned veternas of the Pacific Campaign who had grown to perfect their craft of rooting out the Japanese from island after stoney island. In September of 1944, the Marines are outfitted with their full compliment of M1 Garands, M1 Carbines and the latest iteration of the M1A1 Thompson SMG.

The Battle of Peleliu or Operation Stalemate II was fought between September 15th to November 27th 1944. U.S. Marines of the First Marine Division, and later soldiers of the U.S. Army's 81st Infantry Division, fought to capture an airstrip on the small coral island part of a larger offensive campaign known as Operation Forager. The Commander of 1st Marine Division predicted the island would be secured within 4 days, however, Japan had developed new island defense tactics, well-crafted fortifications and caves that allowed stiff resistance, extending the battle through more than two months.
