How ready are we to deal with an impending asteroid strike ? A new 18-page document outlines how NASA and FEMA will approach the threat of an apocalyptic asteroid strike. The report, which is known as the National Near-Earth Object Preparedness Strategy and Action Plan, details the specific objectives that the agencies will work towards over the next ten years. "This plan is an outline not only to enhance the hunt for hazardous asteroids, but also to better predict their chances of being an impact threat well into the future and the potential effects that it could have on Earth," NASA's planetary defence officer Lindley Johnson told reporters. The plan's five major objectives are: Enhance our ability to detect, track and characterize near-Earth asteroids. Improve our ability to predict whether any given space rock will hit the Earth. Develop new and more effective ways to deflect incoming asteroids. Improve international co-operation and awareness. Develop appropriate emergency procedures to be used in the event of an imminent strike. "Implementing the National Near-Earth Object Preparedness Strategy and Action Plan will greatly increase our nation's readiness... to effectively respond, should a new, potential asteroid impact be detected," said Johnson. Black holes may not be quite what they seem Scientists have put forward the possibility that what we think of as a black hole may be something else entirely. Few cosmic phenomena remain as frightening and mysterious as black holes - regions of space in which the gravitational pull is so great that nothing, not even light itself, can escape. But while there is a great deal of evidence to support the idea that black holes exist, these intriguing stellar phenomena continue to pose a number of theoretical problems, leading some researchers to question whether our understanding of what black holes actually are is correct. One possibility that has been gaining traction recently is that black holes are actually wormholes - theoretical 'tunnels' through space that have been speculated about for years. What's more, a recent study has indicated that the gravitational waves produced by the collision of two wormholes would be very similar to those already picked up from the merging of two black holes. Future gravitational wave detectors should eventually be able to tell the difference between the two. "Now it's the time to take seriously the possibility that there are other objects which can be as massive and compact as black holes," said physicist Vitor Cardoso from the University of Lisbon. I would recommend Lisbon, but we are having a high influx of tourists/workers in the past 2 years. On a positive side there are alot of new job opportunities. On the negative side there are alot of people that are applying for them.
