Mars had all the ingredients necessary for life to develop NASA has announced this week that complex organic matter has been found in an ancient lake bed on Mars. The groundbreaking discovery represents the best evidence yet that Mars was once home to lakes filled with the carbon-based compounds necessary for primitive life forms to develop. Intriguingly, NASA scientists have been unable to determine how this organic matter originally formed, meaning that there is a chance that it was the byproduct of ancient organisms. It may have also been deposited on Mars by comets or asteroids in the distant past. Certainly, the presence of these compounds would have helped to sustain any life that did arise. "We know that on Earth microorganisms eat all sorts of organics. It's a valuable food source for them," said NASA biogeochemist Jennifer Eigenbrode. "While we don't know the source of the material, the amazing consistency of the results makes me think we have a slam-dunk signal for organics on Mars." "It is not telling us that life was there, but it is saying that everything organisms really needed to live in that kind of environment, all of that was there." Would communication be possible ? If we ever do make contact with intelligent aliens, would we have any chance of understanding them ? While astronomers have been scouring the skies for years in search of extraterrestrial signals, comparatively little research has been done on the matter of interpreting an alien message. To help address this, a group of linguists recently got together in Los Angeles in an effort to discuss the challenges of translating an extraterrestrial language. Entitled 'Language of the Cosmos', the workshop was attended by several high-profile language experts including David Peterson who invented the Dothraki language for Game of Thrones. According to linguist Noam Chomsky, there is a 'universal grammar' that connects all languages. "Chomsky has often said that if a Martian visited Earth, it would think we all speak dialects of the same language, because all terrestrial languages share a common underlying structure," said Douglas Vakoch, president of METI ( Messaging Extraterrestrial Intelligence ). "But if aliens have language, would it be similar to ours? That's the big question." While some of the presentations at the conference offered a positive vision of a future where contact with extraterrestrials would be possible, others were less optimistic, instead suggesting that the potential for miscommunication and misunderstanding would be too high. Ultimately however, until such a scenario occurs for real, we will never truly know for sure. Full article here: http://astronomy.com/news/2018/05/what-would-an-alien-language-sound-like

A soldier demonstrating a prototype 'Third Arm' system The unique device acts as a third limb, enabling soldiers to aim and fire heavier weapons during combat. Developed by engineers at the U.S. Army Research Laboratory, the device, which is officially titled 'Third Arm', is both lightweight and works without requiring a power source. "It can help stabilize the weapon and take the load off of their arms," said mechanical engineer Dan Baechle. "It's made from composite materials to make it as light as possible, but also to ensure the range of motion that soldiers need." "We've actually tested it with the M249 and M240B machines guns. The M240B weighs 27lb, and we were able to show that you can take the weight of that weapon completely off of the Soldiers' arms." Whether or not the device is likely to see use during live combat however remains unclear. "Right now it's a prototype device, and it's a fairly early stage prototype device," said Baechle. "It's been getting a lot of interest higher up in the Army, but also online with some of the stories that have come out. We're using some of the interest to help motivate further development of the device." Full article here- https://www.army.mil/article/206011/army_researchers_envision_third_arm_for_soldiers
