The remarkable agricultural breakthrough could help to feed millions of people over the coming decades. Scientists have succeeded in not only growing rice in salt water, but in also producing a yield of 4.5 metric tons per hectare - enough to begin commercialization. According to research leader Yuan Longping, the breakthrough could ultimately increase China's overall rice production by nearly 20 percent and feed upwards of 200 million people. It may take a while for the new strain go mainstream however as, at 50 yuan ($7.50) per kilo, it is currently a whopping eight times more expensive than conventional rice. FRIDAY , 27 October , 18GMT , the map Stoumont will be played in the campaign Road to Glory History Battle of Stoumont At dawn on 19 December, Peiper surprised the American defenders of Stoumont by sending infantry from the 2nd SS Panzergrenadier Regiment in an attack and a company of Fallschirmjäger to infiltrate their lines. He followed this with a Panzer attack, gaining the eastern edge of the town. An American tank battalion arrived but, after a two-hour tank battle, Peiper finally captured Stoumont at 10:30. Knittel joined up with Peiper and reported the Americans had recaptured Stavelot to their east. Peiper ordered Knittel to retake Stavelot. Assessing his own situation, he determined that his Kampfgruppe did not have sufficient fuel to cross the bridge west of Stoumont and continue his advance. He maintained his lines west of Stoumont for a while, until the evening of 19 December when he withdrew them to the village edge. On the same evening the U.S. 82nd Airborne Division under Maj. Gen. James Gavin arrived and deployed at La Gleize and along Peiper's planned route of advance. German efforts to reinforce Peiper were unsuccessful. Kampfgruppe Hansen was still struggling against bad road conditions and stiff American resistance on the southern route. Schnellgruppe Knittel was forced to disengage from the heights around Stavelot. Kampfgruppe Sandig, which had been ordered to take Stavelot, launched another attack without success. Sixth Panzer Army commander Sepp Dietrich ordered Hermann Prieß, commanding officer of the I SS Panzer Corps, to increase its efforts to back Peiper's Kampfgruppe, but Prieß was unable to break through. Small units of the U.S. 2nd Battalion, 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, attacked the dispersed units of Kampfgruppe Peiper on the morning of 21 December. They failed and were forced to withdraw, and a number were captured, including battalion commander Maj. Hal McCown. Peiper learned that his reinforcements had been directed to gather in La Gleize to his east, and he withdrew, leaving wounded Americans and Germans in the Froidcourt Castle (fr). As he withdrew from Cheneux, American paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division engaged the Germans in fierce house-to-house fighting. The Americans shelled Kampfgruppe Peiper on 22 December, and although the Germans had run out of food and had virtually no fuel, they continued to fight. A Luftwaffe resupply mission went badly when SS-Brigadeführer Wilhelm Mohnke insisted the grid coordinates supplied by Peiper were wrong, parachuting supplies into American hands in Stoumont. In La Gleize, Peiper set up defenses waiting for German relief. The United States Air Force is preparing to put nuclear-armed bombers on 24-hour alert for the first time since the Cold War ended 26 years ago. The departments' chief of staff General David Goldfein confirmed the plan in an interview with Defense One, as concerns grow that North Korea's nuclear warpath could cause another world war. The move would see nuclear-armed B-52s parked on concrete pads the end of an 11,000-foot runway at Barksdale Air Force in Louisiana, according to Daily Mail. In a few months the pads, which are dubbed the 'Christmas Tree' because of their angular markings, will be piled high with weapons ready to take off with just a moments notice for the first time since 1991. This comes after Donald Trump met with top military chiefs on October 6, and made a comment about "calm before the storm." Speaking to Defense One, General Goldfein emphasized that orders haven't been given yet, but that they are preparing the bases in the event that it should happen. "This yet one more step in ensuring that we're prepared," General Goldfein explained. "I look at it more as not planning for any specific event, but more for the reality of the global situation we find ourselves in and how we ensure we're prepared going forward." Were things to escalate, the decision to fire would be made by General John Hyten, commander of Strategic Command, or General Lori Robinson, head of Northern Command. A new study has suggested that the mind can still be active even after the body stops showing signs of life. The research, which was led by Dr Sam Parnia, director of critical care and resuscitation research at NYU Langone School of Medicine in New York City, involved investigating patients who had suffered a cardiac arrest and had 'died' but who had then been successfully resuscitated by doctors. The team found accounts of patients who recalled being aware of entire conversations being carried out in the room even after they had been pronounced dead. By cross-referencing these accounts with medical staff present at the time, it was possible to verify that what they had heard was real. Some of the patients had even managed to see things happening around them during this time. Death is typically defined as the point at which the heart has stopped and blood is no longer flowing to the brain, however now it seems as though a person's mind can still remain active after this time. "Technically, that's how you get the time of death - it's all based on the moment when the heart stops," said Dr Parnia. "Once that happens, blood no longer circulates to the brain, which means brain function halts almost instantaneously." "You lose all your brain stem reflexes - your gag reflex, your pupil reflex, all that is gone." Back in 2013, researchers at the University of Michigan determined that the brain may enter in to a "hyper-alerted state" for a short period of time after clinical death. Valve has released a new update for CS:GO, officially bringing the reworked version of Dust2 to the game client. After hitting the beta depot last week, the new Dust2 is now officially live, replacing the previous version of the map in the game. In an update post, Valve confirmed that it will "continue to update" Dust2 "as more feedback comes in". On Monday, a small pre-release patch with minor fixes to the map was released. Following Wednesday's update, the Perfect World graffiti and stickers are now available for purchase worldwide after a one-month period in which they were exclusive to Chinese players downloading CS:GO from the Perfect World client.
