WELCOME TO THE 66TH ARMORED REGIMENT

    41stinfantry-600.png

In December 1942, the regiment participated in the amphibious invasion of French Morocco in North Africa and led the division's entry into Casablanca. The regiment participated in the invasion of Sicily and through fierce fighting earned the unit six battle streamers during the war.

In 1944, the three battalions of the regiment went into action on the European Continent, beginning landing on Omaha Beach on D+3 (9 June 1944.) Four days later the regiment (as part of Combat Command A of the 2nd Armored Division) fought through elements of the German 6th Fallschirmjager Regiment and elements of the 17th SS Panzergrenadier Division southwest of Carentan, France at the Battle of Bloody Gulch. Later progress was also initially difficult in combat against elements of the newly arrived 116th Panzer Division and surviving elements of the Panzer Lehr Division. In a difficult battle in the streets of the village of Percy and on surrounding high ground on 30 July, against some of the eight Panthers Generalleutnant Fritz Bayerlein had found and rallied from workshops at neighbouring Villebaudon on 28 July, the 3/66th was to lose 13 tanks and was forced to pull out of the village losing another five tanks outside Percy to heavy Nebelwerfer and other mortar fire. On 31 July 3/66th was down to only 24 operational tanks. The regiment fought across France to the German border with the rest of the division and the U.S. Third Army, but was diverted north to counter the German advance during the Battle of the Bulge, assisting in the destruction of the 2nd Panzer Division and capturing Houffalize, Belgium.

The regiment was twice cited in the Order of the Day of the Belgian Army. Captain James M. Burt, the commander of B Company, 66th Armored Regiment, was awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroism during the Battle of Aachen in October 1944. Captain Burt later served as Honorary Colonel of the Regiment.

    Officers of the Regiment:

    Spindrifter

Has served in many campaigns.  He performed as a captain and in other officer positions.  He is an avid public player.  You will often find him on the public server leading a squad with VOIP.  He is well liked by all who play with him.  He is a proven organizer and commander who will keep the company on task.

    $talker

He has been leading squads on the public server for ages.  He specializes in leading commandos on critical missions to win the round.  If you want action go with Stalker.  This is his first campaign but he is ready after years of providing order in the chaos of the public server.

  3. Battle #: 4  Operation Nordwind

Performance of Self:  I had some good runs in the Chaffee.  Other than that I did only OK.

Divisonal Performance:  This was a hard map to manage with less than 50 people.  For large maps like this, we really need to be more flexible.  One of the tactics that the Axis used to good effect was to take all of their troops away from their quiet flags and overwhelm us at the 3rd flag.  I have seen this in the last couple of battles.  We must have a strategy to thwart this.  We must continue to send small units to harass their flags so that they cannot do a team push on the critical flag.  We need to stop wasting time butting our head against their main force.  We need to find out where they are weak and take advantage.  My company was split into two small squads defending two flags.  Some wanted to make a 3rd squad for harassing.  I think they were right.  I wish other companies were as nimble minded.

“So in war, the way is to avoid what is strong, and strike at what is weak.”
― Sun Tzu, The Art of War

Regimental Performance:  We did pretty well.  We were responsible for holding 2 flags all night and they were held most of the time.  We still need to work on watching the flag zone and maintaining the RP.  These are problems when you are stuck defending all night.

Officer's Performance:  It was said that we did not give enough reports on CC.  We need to work on that.  Though I reported and heard Spin's reports, we need to repeat it and be louder I guess.  There was a lot of unnecessary chatter on CC by others and our soft-spoken American accents may not get everyone's attention.

Medal Recommendations:  Red bleeder watch the Farmstead flag for two rounds.  Someone has to do jobs like that.

    Additional notes:

  4. Battle #: 3 Hill 262

Performance of Self:  As HQ, not very good.  We lost.  I was pretty good sneaking into back flags and running ammo kits across the map, but that probably doesn't count.

Divisonal Performance:  We faced some pretty tough odds and performed respectably in many rounds.  However we had some major breakdowns in coordination and communication.  Some of that was my fault as you had to adjust to a less hands on commander.  However, it seemed like there were issues with coordination within the companies.  We lost some flags needlessly because no one stayed to defend.  We also wasted alot of time and tickets banging our heads against walls before deciding to assault another target.  Most of these rounds were close.  We could have eeked out a win had mistakes like those not been made.  I remember a round where we capped 4 flags, grayed the 5th, then went on to lose.  All through the battle, I was never sure about the situation of our tanks.  I didn't even know which squad was the tankers, maybe there wasn't one.  We will focus on that before Friday.  We will have to have a solid tanking game for the remaining battles.

Regimental Performance:  I only briefly served with you guys so I can only give outside observations.  You guys did a lot of stuff well and were pretty aggressive.  Unfortunately, you left some flag zones unprotected.  I had trouble communicating with Jassu's squad, until I joined it.  He seemed to be wandering all over the place.  Sometimes that was good sometimes not.  It's important to tell HQ when you plan to leave a flag to go on attack.  Empty flags probably cost us a round or two.  I had much more communication with Spindrifter but I dont think his guys always followed his direction.  He had a hard time hearing me.  I think the chatter in his channel might have been overwhelming.  We want everyone to have fun, but this is not some glorified pubby game night.  We can be more successful and have more fun if we exercise a little more discipline.  Pay attention to orders, know the duty priorities (flag defense, RPs, etc.), be aware that the leaders have to communicate on CC too, etc.  Getting a job done right is the kind of fun people signed up for.

Officer's Performance:  I think Spin had a lot to deal with and I commend him for keeping his cool and doing his best to get the job done.

Medal Recommendations:  If I can figure it out, I will try get some medals out this week.

Additional notes:  I may or may not be HQ again this Friday.  Try to make it easy for Spin, if I am not your captain.

  5. It's OK.  Other companies did a poor job of holding that flag also, often leaving it abandoned.  We didn't prioritize it later because we were able to capture the other side of the map.  In general, we need to better coordinate who is attacking who is defending.

I did not know our tanks were getting massacred coming out of main, though that was common in past campaigns.  We have a similar map this week with lots of heavy German tanks.  We need to greatly improve communications with the tankers.

  6. @Shadownick

Make sure situation reports get sent up to CC.  As HQ, I had no idea there was a problem getting tanks out of our NW main.  I dont remember any such reports.  We would have put more of a priority on that flag if it was communicated on CC.

"Doing nothing on a flag" is called defending.  Someone has to do it.  We lost many flags because some guys just sneaked in and grayed it without the defenders noticing.  Most of the close rounds we lost can be blamed on this.  It is the company commander's job to make sure there are people watching the flag while sending his other troops forward to harass the enemy.

BTW, if you have flag bug, your officers should tell you how to fix it.  Lowering graphic settings, clearing the cache, etc.  Unfortunately, this will be a common thing on the maps we will play.

I am responding to your post because I think it raises good points for the whole team, nothing personal.

  7. Good to see you ShadowNick.  This is not WaW, so you will not see the attention to spotting that you are used to.  In fact most spots probably came from the few old WaW guys in this tournament.  I actually hope that we remove spotting ability altogether via the minimod.  It is better to have no spotting than bad spotting, IMO.  The comet is a good idea.  I will try to get the admin to put it in.

  8. Battle #: 2 Gela

Performance of Self:   I did OK.  I didn't have to do much since I had other people leading my squads.  I'm pretty sure the general has forgotten I am captain.  That is fine though.

Divisonal Performance:   We did well by reacting quickly, we need to continue to improve on that.  In the last round, the enemy was playing better because they reinforced quickly.  They are constantly learning.  We need to get better at calling off attacks that have no chance and exploiting unprotected flags.  If numbers are permitting, I suggest having a 3-4 man commando team probe flags constantly.  More than once, on my own, I found flags defended by one or two of their HQ.

Regimental Performance:  I am very satisfied with our performance.  We proved to be quite capable of handling multiple tasks.

Officer's Performance:   Spindrifter and Matsku did excellent jobs leading.  They hardly need a captain at all.  Their communication on CC and with their men was particularly effective.

Medal Recommendations:  It's time for medals.  Let's see your recommendations.

Additional notes:   I am grateful to Jassu for leading the squad when I disconnected and continuing until Matsku arrived.
