History
"Prior to the armistice, the Greek island was occupied by roughly 12,000 Italian troops (the 33rd Infantry Division "Acqui") and a smaller German contingent. When Italy defected to the Allies, German forces demanded the Italians surrender their weapons. Italian General Antonio Gandin put the decision to a vote, and the troops overwhelmingly chose to resist rather than hand over their arms.
Heavy fighting erupted across the island. The German 1st Mountain Division, supported by dive bombers, pounded Italian positions. The Italians fought valiantly but were ultimately overpowered, suffering roughly 1,300 battle casualties before surrendering on September 21."
